Background
- 9000 BC, Canaan (Israel & surrounding areas), dates back to first walled city and trading center, Jericho. Sumerians, Egyptians, Hyksos, and Hittites among others all invaded and fought for control.
- One local nomadic group, Hebrews, arrived when Abraham migrated with his family. He left Sumer with a message from his God that a great nation shall be made.
- In Canaan, Abraham fathers Isaac, and then Isaac fathers Jacob. Jacob changes his name to Israel after his father dies, and fathers/grandfathers The Twelve Tribes of Israel.
- (Abraham also had a son named Ishmael, whom Muslims consider ancestral line to Muhammad)
- One of Israel's sons, Joseph, ended up in Egypt, and rose to some prominence. Canaan faced severe droughts, so Joseph brought his family to Egypt to provide better for them. After Joseph died, his family and people were enslaved by Egyptians after wars with the Hyksos, leading to the Exodus.
